The deer are long-time permanent residents of Durango. There is nothing deer proof and all your tender plants especially vegetables need to be fully fenced. Otherwise one has to coexist with these silly and beautiful creatures, that can be hugely destructive. Yet there are ways to DETER the deer or not invite them into your yard. Salvia is the only plant I can affirm they will not eat., and there are many of those. You want to create an environment that not interesting and possibly offensive such Nepeta, Mint, Origanum, Allium, Raspberry, Cactus and lastly can sustain the damage or the deer can eat it and it does not kill the plant, such as Columbine penstemon yarrow, spruce, oak…anything and everything Native.
